“Crying is for plain women. Pretty women go shopping.”  Is it really true? 😀 let’s see.. It is true, you need retail therapy to relieve stress which is actually a coping mechanism. Window-shopping gets you out of the house and you have people around you.

If you are unsure about yourself, just have a look at your credit card statement. You might rapidly realize that retail therapy is your favorite way to relieve your stress and it helps to deal with certain feelings. Feelings may include sadness, angriness, and stress. Just monitor what you do actually:

  1. Spend money when you’re stressed out about your finances
  2. Return purchases regularly
  3. Feel guilty or regret about buying soon after making them
  4. Shop to make others like you or to be like them
  5. Make purchases you can’t pay for right away

So, if you experience any one of these or all then it can be the stress coping mechanism for you.

How retail therapy relieve stress?

You might make a purchase that boosts your self-esteem. There is a sense of empowerment every time you decide to buy something for you. A little shopping during a tough time or emotional time is not certainly a bad thing. I think retail therapy is a better option than emotional eating or the use of alcohol to deal with anxiety or stress. For some, retail therapy is an impetuous coping skill, spending can provide somewhat relief when you are trying to manage your feelings. As long as you do it in balance, you will be more likely to experience a healing effect from shopping.

On the other hand, if emotional spending hurts your economic security or your relations, there is a need to consider other options. Shopping therapy might even turn into a cycle. Suppose, you spend when you feel bad, and shopping makes you feel better; the good feelings fade with time onwards, you feel crummy again and the shopping cycle starts again. One more thing that retailers do is that they make emotional ads to target you directly. So retail therapy can have, reverse effects. Just be aware of it. There is a need to understand that the purchased thing makes you happy or the buying process? Just think that you don’t need to spend money for a better feel.

How to manage your emotional spending?

If you or someone you love uses retail therapy, and you really can’t afford it, there are a lot of ways to cope with emotional spending. First, there is a need to recognize how you cope and then having a wish to do something about it. Is it really a retail therapy to relieve stress or Compulsive Buying Disorder (CBD)

Retail therapy is purchasing something once and a while to feel better while CBD is a behavioral disorder where you can’t control your desires to spend money and buy things. It is recommended to seek help from a professional therapist for this issue of concern.

It is your life and wise decisions are necessary for you. Love yourself because no one would do your work. Accept the situation that has happened to you and try to manage it healthily with shopping otherwise go for other options. At least give it a try you will feel better and good about you.
